It Is Engraved Underneath With The Wording “Oak Used By The Saxons in Winchester AD 600. Stool AD 1888.”

Astonishingly, the wording to the bottom of the panel suggests it dates from the Saxon period. And, it was during the late 19th century that someone decided to have a go at making stool with it…! Using this ancient piece of wood, they elaborately carved one side in classic Victorian style and then added four legs, in a very crude make-do manner, that oozes character and charm.

From about 660 to the 11th century, Winchester was the religious, political, and cultural heart of Anglo-Saxon England, especially under King Alfred and his successors in Wessex.

This piece has so many wonderful elements going for it and is a favourite find.

Condition is as seen.
