They were named an after t\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003ehe \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eBow Street Magistrates’ Court\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e in central London.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThey were essentially \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003edetectives\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e who investigated crimes, arrested criminals, and brought them to justice. They were \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003enot uniformed\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e like later police forces. They were p\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eaid by the court, u\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003enlike modern police officers, they were originally \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003epart-time\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e and received fees and rewards for successful arrests and convictions.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThey remained active and influential into the early part of the 19th century, just before the full development of the modern police system under Queen Victoria (who came to the throne in 1837).
