You Gotta Love It!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHadji Ephraim Benguiat (1852-1918) was a most knowledgeable dealer in antiques who helped create the first public Judaica Collection in the United States.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003eBenguiat formed an exquisite collection of Jewish decorative and ceremonial art, rich in beautiful and important textiles and metalwork from Ottoman lands and Italy, as well as Western and Central Europe. He brought his collection to the World’s Fair in Chicago in 1893, subsequently it was placed on loan with the Smithsonian Institution, Washington DC. Eventually, Cyrus Adler arranged for the collection to be acquired for the newly formed Jewish Museum of New York, where until today, it is the bedrock of their permanent collection.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLachrymatory bottles or “Tear Catchers” like this one were sold as souvenirs at the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago, where Benguiat’s collection was on display.
