A chilling and deeply evocative antique 19th century cast iron pauper’s grave marker that carries a sombre, macabre presence. Forged into the shape of a simple, rugged trefoil or cross, this marker was used in municipal or church cemeteries to denote the final resting place of society's most destitute. Because their families could not afford custom stone headstones, the deceased were laid to rest in pauper plots, their identities reduced to a number in a public registry.
The front of the cross prominently features the number "958" cast in bold, raised lettering. This number directly corresponded to a specific entry in the cemetery's paper registry book. The reverse side bears a faint, weathered letter "P," explicitly designating the plot as a pauper's grave.
A hauntingly beautiful artefact of Victorian social history.
Condition is good, commensurate with age. Heavily oxidised, deeply pitted, with a rusted surface. A rich, dark patina built over more than a century of exposure to the elements.
