This is an exceptional and highly decorative piece of early primitive treen. The vessel features the distinct characteristics of a traditional wooden drinking beaker carved from a single piece of hardwood.
The form strongly resembles early Gaelic drinking vessels. The deep brown colouration and heavily weathered surface are highly consistent with wood that has been preserved for centuries in an anaerobic environment, such as a peat bog.
It features a beautiful patina with heavy wear, deep age cracks, and a rough, eroded texture. Despite the significant historic wear, the wood structure remains stable and cohesive.
At just 71.04 grams, it is extremely lightweight, which is a classic indicator of ancient wood that has completely dried out over a very long period of time.
A beautiful piece of folk heritage, a museum piece really, that makes for a marvellous decorative object. Please study the photos carefully to judge the age and condition for yourself.
