A utterly charming pair of antique carved wooden caryatid figures depicting a gentleman and woman, in a wonderful folk art manner. The male figure wears a distinctive headdress and long buttoned garment, while the female figure wears a long dress and carries a small pouch or girdle purse at her waist. Their exaggerated faces and bold, simplified carving give them a particularly characterful folk art quality, albeit with slightly creepy and unhinged stares. Both figures are attached to separate narrow wooden boards, with the backs retaining their old, rustic finish and original fixing holes.
Wonderfully decorative and utterly charming!
Condition is good, commensurate with age and use. There is a crack to the separate back board of one but this is structurally sound and it does not transfer onto the carving itself. Other than this, both are very good.
