A wonderful 18th century goblet carved from a single piece of oak with an assortment of protection marks.
Likely given as a form of love token with a date of a significant occasion carved into it, along with a heart and someone’s initials.
Throughout history people have used protective symbols on everyday objects to protect themselves against anything from witches and evil spirits, to bad luck.
You’ll see this has a carved saltire, a cross, a hexafoil and two crossed branches. These are a wonderful insight into our ancestor’s everyday life, where they felt vulnerable and how they went about protecting themselves.
Condition is good, commensurate with age and use. Structurally sound. A Small split to the base of the cup from age, use and warping.
