A rare antique 19th century carved bone or antler sailor folk art seam rubber. It has been skilfully carved and is covered with an extraordinary array of hand carved symbols, motifs and personal markings. The end has become beautifully smooth from years of use.
Traditionally used by sailors, sailmakers and maritime workers to smooth and manipulate seams in canvas sails, seam rubbers were practical working tools that were often personalised by their owners. This example has been transformed into a remarkable piece of folk art, with the surface covered in a dense collection of carved graffiti, including symbols similar to those associated with Masonic tradition.
Whether these markings represent genuine Masonic affiliation, personal symbolism or protective marks, they provide an interesting insight into the beliefs and identity of the person who carried and used it all those years ago.
The heavy, smooth feel of the material makes me lean towards antler, and the wonderfully worn surface give it a fantastic tactile quality, with a rich patina that can only come from years of use and handling.
