A fabulous albeit slightly macabre collection of mourning pieces from the 19th century. The collection is made up of the following:
1. A beautiful mourning hair ring. These rings were made using the hair of deceased loved ones, carefully braided or woven into intricate bands, serving as a tangible and deeply personal memorial. The gold (unmarked) name plate is engraved to the front with the deceased person’s initials and to the back is the year of their death, 1832.
2. A handwritten envelope that reads “Matthews mittens The gift of dear cousin…” I am unable to make out the final line. Within the envelope is a rare pair of the sweetest and tiniest child’s black mourning lace mittens.
3. Two smaller folded pieces of paper with handwritten notes on them. One says “Phyllis aged 6 weeks July 23rd 92” and the other reads “Hilda’s hair aged 5 weeks”. Within the envelopes are tiny locks of hair.
This is a dear collection for a collector of the macabre or more specifically, of mourning pieces.
