A sweet antique 19th century silver locket containing dried white heather, a talisman used to protect against witchcraft, curses and malicious spirits.
During the 19th century, particularly in Scotland and rural Celtic regions, dried heather was sometimes sealed within lockets, brooches, and other silver keepsakes as a protective charm rooted in older folk tradition. Heather, especially white heather, was widely associated with spiritual protection and was believed to guard the wearer against witchcraft, curses, the evil eye, and malicious spirits said to inhabit wild moorland landscapes.
These beliefs came from longstanding Scottish and Celtic folklore rather than formal religion. Carrying or wearing dried heather was thought to repel harmful supernatural influence, while burning heather or placing it near a doorway was believed to purify and protect the home. During the Victorian era, these older protective customs merged with the fashion for sentimental botanical jewellery, allowing heather to serve both as an ornamental keepsake and a discreet talisman against unseen forces.
