Keeping mementos of both major life milestones and tragic events was incredibly common, and culturally essential, for the Victorians. If an event mattered, Victorians ensured they had a physical object to anchor it to the real world.

In this case, a memento of the 1880 Chester electoral “Beer” riots. Believed to be a tavern table leg, it has hand written provenance down the side stating “This window smasher is preserved in remembrance of Chester election April 1st 1880.” A rare piece of British social history and one which was actually used in the mob violence that unfolded.

The Chester riots were a flashpoint of severe urban collective violence, driven by political corruption, partisan infighting, and mass intoxication. Chester became one of several towns across the UK where inadequate policing allowed mob violence to completely disrupt the election process.

The main weapon of Parliamentary warfare in Chester was beer. Candidates aggressively bought out public houses, distributing massive quantities of free alcohol to voters on polling day in order to create a highly volatile atmosphere in the streets.

To protect their campaigns and sway voters, the political parties hired large groups of men under the guise of "election employees". While the Liberals hired hundreds of "clerks and messengers," the Conservatives famously hired 70 bricklayers to intimidate and fuel violence.

Fueled by the free-flowing alcohol, mob violence broke out across the city. Rioters utilised whatever missiles they could get their hands on, just like the tavern table leg on offer here. Because Chester’s local police force was entirely inadequate to deal with the scale of the unrest, the rioters effectively controlled the streets, causing extensive property damage and assaulting opposition supporters.

The fallout from the 1880 election permanently altered Chester’s political landscape. A swift legal hearing uncovered an overwhelming web of corruption, and the newly elected MPs were formally unseated. While 914 local individuals were found guilty of giving or receiving bribes and treats, receiving a seven year ban from voting.

The City of Chester lost its right to return members to Parliament and was left completely unrepresented until 1885.

The systemic ugliness of the 1880 election cycle in places like Chester directly shamed Parliament into passing the Corrupt and Illegal Practices Prevention Act 1883. This historic legislation placed strict caps on campaign spending, effectively ending the era of open street "beer warfare" and the mass hired thugs that fuelled Victorian electoral riots.

A rare survivor, a museum piece really! It even has a period riveted copper belt with a hoop, allowing for it to be presented hung from a wall.

Condition is good, commensurate with age and use. Structurally sound.
