A fabulous World War 1 folk art horn beaker, engraved with the name ‘Old Bill’ above his portrait.
To the back it reads: “Old Bill says, take a nip nightly and think of Blighty. Cambrai, 1917”.
Old Bill was created by Captain Bruce Bairnsfather, a British soldier and artist. Portrayed as a grumbling walrus-moustached veteran soldier. He was a symbol of British ‘Tommies’ and their gallows humour spirit during the war.
‘Cambrai’ refers to the Battle of Cambrai, France.
The Battle of Cambrai in 1917 was a major British offensive on the Western Front remembered for the first massed, effective use of tanks, a surprise artillery plan, and a powerful German counter-attack. Fought from November 20 to December 7, 1917 in northern France, it broke the long stalemate of trench warfare before ending with both sides back near their start lines.
Condition is good, commensurate with age and use. Structurally sound.
