A Fabulous Rare Medieval Inscribed Partial Purse Bar, Circa 13th-15th Century AD.
The two small loops with holes extending from the side are stitching tabs. A wealthy medieval merchant or noble would have sewn a high status fabric or leather pouch directly through those holes.
It has a partial inscription on which appears to read ‘Ave Maria’ (Hail Mary), albeit missing the last letter from where it has lost its end. ‘Ave Maria’ was used as a talisman to ward off evil spirits, demons, and bad luck. Simply speaking or carrying the name of Mary was believed to terrify the devil and shield the wearer from spiritual harm.
To the other side is a collection of crosses which similarly were used to protect against evil spirits, demons, and bad luck.
Condition is commensurate with age, use and how it was found.
