A very rare antique 18th century millstone with a selection of apotropaic marks or ‘witches marks’.
It has a ‘Marian Mark’ (overlapping v) which historically were carved into houses to ward off evil spirits and believed to invoke the protection of the Virgin Mary. These symbols were often placed at vulnerable points like doors, windows, and fireplaces to act as a spiritual barrier, protecting against perceived threats like sickness, poor harvests, and the malevolent influence of witches.
It also has a collection of ‘Hexafoils’ or Daisy wheels!
These exciting protection marks were likely added to guard against curses or bad luck in the food supply.
A fabulous piece of social history and a rare item!
Condition is good, commensurate with age and use. Structurally sound with age related wear to the wooden handle and stone.
Measures 18cm x 12cm
